History of Fethiye

Fethiye is located on the Lycian and Carian border and was called Telmessos in ancient times. The city was very prominent and also a centre of prophecy, with a temple dedicated to Apollo. Evidence that the city life was rich and highly cultured during the Hellenic and Roman periods can be seen from the existing monuments. Today remnants of the city wall still exist along with rock - tombs, Lycian – type’s sarcophagi, the fortress and the roman theatre.

The peninsula lying between Fethiye and Antalya was known as Lycians in these times.

The tombs of Amyntas, which could be considered as the insignia of Fethiye, strikes the eye with its grandeur on the slopes as you enter the bay. This tomb, whose facade was built as a lonic temple, Amyntas is believed to be a king or a governor of Telmessos during the Hellenic period.

All around the city you can see a number of Lycian scarcophagi. On these there are epitaphs written in the Lycian scripture. The sarcophagus near the government house is particularly worthy of notice, with its amazing relief’s depicting warriors.

The fortress stands where the city was first founded and the existing walls date from the 11th century. in some places, portions off wall from the Roman period can be seen. The fortress was repaired by the Knights of Rhodes during the 15th Century and was used as a naval base.

Telmessos ancient theatre stands opposite the commercial quay in Fethiye town center. A typical roman style theatre was built in the 2nd century, on the remains of the previous Greek one. The site was excavated by the fethiye Archaeology Museum in 1993, when a restoration Project was started to renovate the theatres cavea and stage.

A Project to create an open air museum within the ancient theatre began in 2001. Fethiye Municipality and the director of the museum are leading the Project to reform the centre of town with the idea of protecting the natural and cultural environments of Fethiye. The Teke peninsula, which lies between Fethiye and Antalya, was known as LYCİA in ancient times. The Lycians participated in the Kadesh War with Hittites, which indicates that they were one of the oldest tribes of Anatolia. All through history, Lycia was invaded by the Persians, Alexander the Great, Romans and the Byzantines but was never evacuated. Fethiye is a good centre from which to make excursions into this ancient region and visit the major Lycian cities.

Butterfly Valley

Butterfly Valley, one of the most beautiful bay of Fethiye is situated on a plain of ten hectares at the foot of a very step and deep valley. In the valley, where all the sea-level butterflies of the Mediterranean can be observed all at once like an open-air museum. It is possible to observe 30 species of daylight and 40 species of night butterflies for nine to ten months, from springtime onwards.

The Butterfly Valley can be reached after a trip of half-an-hour in a service boat from Oludeniz. Another choice is flying by Paragliding from Babadag ( 2000 mt ). You can enjoy the same wonderful panorama.

As construction is prohibited in the valley, there is no accommodation but it is possible to take a tent there or spend the night in wooden barracks covered with shrubs and leaves.

Following the enjoyment of a swim in the turquoise waters of the tiny cove, a surprise awaits the trekkers into the valley among the rich flora. Two small waterfalls, reached at top of step and high cliffs, offer the chance of a pleasant shower. For travelers wishing to have a holiday in a natural and safe media devoid of concrete, the Butterfly Valley is an ideal choice.

The Butterfly Valley is a stopping point for all the boats offering daily tours from Oludeniz. Even a short stop at the valley, reached by boats leaving every morning from Belcekiz beach, is sufficient to remind you that you are now in a different type of heaven. in recent years,  the route for those who choose the lycian road for trekking also includes this magnificence. A small restaurant at the valley meets the food and beverages requirement. The butterfly valley of Fethiye, and its fauna, is within the same ecological system as the butterfly valley at Rhodes. It is altogether another experience to observe the Jersey Tiger butterflies, which draws special interest of nature addicts and the fauna-flora researches, in this heaven located right next to turquoise waters.

It is built on the ruins of the antique Lycian Karmylassos and among the approximately 3,500 civilians architectural buildings constructed since the 11th century; there are 2 large churches, 19 chapels, 2 schools, a hospital, a library and many workshops. The village, where people of different cultures lived together in friend-ship and peace in the past, was vacated due to a population Exchange treaty between Greece and Turkey in 1922. At present the Kaya Koyu has an appearance of a ghost town where 2 churches, a school and a few houses are being restored by the Union of Turkish Travel Agencies and the chamber of Architects with the aim of maintaining the site as a village of friendship and peace.

Kaya Koyu is significant as a settlement dating back to antique Karmylassos where different cultures have merged and migrated over the years. The Stone houses, churches, chapels, workshops and other buildings constructed on the slopes in the typical Mediterranean architecture, not over showing each other and the narrow streets in between are representative of an architectural laboratory.

The settlement on the plains, surrounded by the Turkish Village and know by the name of Levissi, is reported to have a population of 6,500. Pursuant to the Exchange, the Turks, coming from the Western Thrace to replace the Greeks who have migrated to Rhodes. Crete and the outskirts of Athens, could not adjust to the physical conditions of the appearance of a ghost town today.

Kaya Koyu is protected as a prominent sample of the mosaics of the Anatolian cultures. It is re-evaluated within the scope of a Project based on a contemporary concept of the echo- tourism with the purpose of revving the exuberance, which transformed into melancholy in the past. The government and the civilian institutions are continuing their efforts to complete the restoration and planning operations in the near future to transform the Kaya Koyu as an exemplary centre of friendship, peace, science, culture and art of the world.
